The ideal home in France

What constitutes the ideal French home? Perhaps like father Christmas it is a nice idea but in fact there is no such thing.

However illusory the concept seems, those that work in property say time and time again there are certain things that the majority of people who are looking to buy in France look for. Therefore we've come up with this list of things that Brits look for in their French property - see whether it compares with yours or whether your tastes are a little less mainstream than this!

The plot of land seems to be a big thing with us Brits, and we always want to get as much space as we possibly can for our money. A nice big plot of land is good with lots of space and not being too close to the neighbours too.

Many people love the idea of having several outbuildings attached to the property, however rickety. These say 'potential' to us and we have the idea of either enjoying time fiddling with them and doing them up and adding to the value of the property or even doing them up to hire out and make money from; perhaps the local art class would like to use it as a venue.

Close to a town or supermarket but also in the wilderness. This is one of those curious ones as it is something of a contradiction, but many want the illusion of being in the middle of nowhere in some idyll, but also want the convenience of not being far from being able to get the food and creature comforts. Finding such places can be tricky, as if you really are in the country, well you really are in the country.

Isolation. Related to the above point, but we really don't seem to like having our neighbours too close to us so we can have that peace and quiet we all crave. A property on a main road or simply near a very busy area is generally a no-no.

So how did you do? Are you the stereotypical French property buyer or not... post in our forums and let us know what you look for in property abroad!
