Searching for a property in France

These days there are so many sources of information on properties in France that we can suffer information overload, so what sources should one take into account when looking for property in France?

There are different schools of thought on this, but really the more you immerse yourself in property, the more sources of information you take into account, the more you can let knowledge of the French property market gently seep over you.

One big recommendation is that if you think it is possible you might want to buy in France at some stage, then to gain a general understanding of the market as soon as you can - even if you don't think you will actually take active steps to buy for a year.

As time goes by, you will start to get a feel for the state of the French property market, what the exchange rate is doing, general sentiment to the market, how prices are holding up in areas you are thinking of buying in and so on - you can get a good feel for it just like you might with your own domestic market, and this can be a big plus.

By making yourself something of an expert - or at least very au fait with the French market - when it comes to the actual search itself this background knowledge can prove of invaluable assistance.

Next, the type of property you want will impact your decision. For instance if you are going to be having an investment property, then the rental market will need to be strong: and you will also need to buy a property that is suitable for renting; just because there is a strong rental market in an area do not assume that every property will be equally attractive and easy to rent, because you can bet it won't be so!

Now how to whittle things down when you are overloaded with information from estate agents, the internet and so on and so forth.

Well, you need to narrow things down immediately by making two choices: Firstly, what your budget is (price bracket) and secondly where abouts you want to live: as in which region of France. This will whittle the options right down, but those choices themselves are not necessarily easy, so require care and attention and not a little thought.

However once done, then you'll need to actually go to France and see some properties. This is where your checklist comes in, where you can avoid making a potentially regrettable emotional decision and where the searching process really begins in earnest!
