Important statements for an investor to look out for

There is a whole industry around the documents that are released by companies, and many firms of course have several people who are paid to keep abreast of the releases from a company, and go over them with a fine toothcomb, hoping to find some little gem or morsel of detail that some other firm has missed out on.

However as a private individual your time will be limited, you will be monitoring many different companies, and simply won't have the time or perhaps the energy to read through all the releases, particularly if you invest in a large top FTSE company that will be releasing news all the time.

Given this, what sort of statements should you pay particular attention to as an investor that is a shareholder in a company?

Well, two types of statement that will be of most interest would be one that is called a profit warning: when the company says that it thinks the results the company will announce will not meet expectation. Remember that the markets look to the future and often factor in what they think will happen in future into the current share price.

So this means that actually a company can make a healthy profit but disappoint the market if that profit falls short of expectations.

The second statement of interest would be one to do with a possible offer for the company, and a company that is seen as a possible acquisition target can be particularly of interest to investors, and of course if the offer price per share is anticipated to be high above the current price this can lead to lots of people buying the shares on the expectation of being able to make a quick profit.

There are various news services that aggregate all the announcements daily, and most share services now when you click on your portfolio will automatically list for you the latest announcements and releases from a company, so you don't have to trawl through a whole list to find those that will be of interest to you.
