We have probably all heard of interior design, and interior designers in general - but what exactly is interior design itself?

Well, according to Wikipedia, it refers to a profession in which "creative and technical solutions are applied within a structure to achieve a built interior environment".

What does that mean in simple, plain English? Essentially, that an interior designer works out how to layout the contents of a particular room, or entire house, in order to achieve the desired look or feel, in the jargon to achieve the right aesthetic look or ambience.

In theory, interior design has a particular process or methodology that should be followed by adherents, though this varies from project to project and indeed from designer to designer. The interior designer certainly needs good people skills in order to get clients, then to understand what it is the clients are looking for, and then to deliver against their needs and indeed their expectations.

Because of its umbrella nature, there are various skills that it is useful for an interior designer to have in order to be flexible and meet the requirements of a wide ranging brief. This is because they made need various different expertise on one project: such as not just design but also an awareness of architecture, structure, and decoration.

There are those who specialist in certain areas, but there are many generalists as well. There are also those interior designers that specialise in focusing on a particular area, for instance those who work exclusively on the design and layout of kitchens, or bathrooms, or perhaps a workspace and so on. In the commercial arena there are designers who focus on how to layout all sorts of stores and commercial premises.

It is very hard to say what the salary of an interior designer is as it varies drastically from person to person and company, and of course whether they are self employed, level of experience and seniority too.

There are various 'celebrity' interior designers, and there are a range of TV programs in the UK that feature interior design work. Well known names in this field include Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and also Linda Barker.
