Finding Property Prices

For property price information after 1995, then you can try the Land Registry.

The Land Registry has something that is called a "Residential Property Price Report". This is a report that gets issued four times a year, and contains information on average house prices. This is split up based on counties (eg Hampshire, Surrey) etc, and the categories that are covered are terraced, flats, semi-detached and detached. It was published until the end of 2006.

Note that they do not (at time of writing anyway) procide information on individual properties, but rather have information at a higher level, for instance at a level of postcode sector at the bottom.

However, the land registry does have a 'find a property' service, and this does enable you to access information on title information but at a cost, at time of writing this is £4. A link to the website is here:

https://www.landregistry.gov.uk/wps/portal/Property_Search

You go to that site and you type in the house number and postcode, this then brings back the address of the property and also the tenure (e.g. freehold). It then lets you download, depending on the property, a title register and title plan document, with samples available so you can get an idea of what these documents are, for £4.

Returning to the residential property price report then you can get access to these online here http://www1.landregistry.gov.uk/publications/default.asp?fl=1&pubtype=0

These were published until the end of 2006.

There are also other reports available, for instance with information focusing on particular sectors, if those are of interest to you however then you will have to pay for them, there is more information available on the above site.

For up-to-date and more comprehensive information on the land registry then you should take a look at their website:
http://www.landregistry.gov.uk

Of course, there are various other services online and websites that also offer information on house price data and so on, and some also enable you to see the history of your house in terms of how much each owner has paid for a set period of time, these sites will usually charge you to access the property prices.
