How to get planning permission

There are a large number of times where you might want to make some development to your property or land and will require planning permission.

Even for many changes that you consider to be minor you will actually need to have planning permission for what you are trying to do.

So the first thing is to work out whether you need planning permission before you actually apply for it.

To find out if you do, then you will need to contact the planning department of your local council.

Many people feel daunted by the whole process of planning permission and have been put off by horror stories of having reams of paperwork, a slow moving process and generally that planning permission can be rather a painful process of documentation and revisions, trying to dot the i's and cross all the t's.

However, there is lots of information about the planning process and planning applications that can tell you a lot about what you need to know.

To find out more visit the relevant section of the directgov website here:

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/homeandcommunity/planning/planningpermission/dg_4018105

This will give you lots of information about the planning process, how it works, what to consider and what to do if you think you do need planning permission.
