Relocation Agents

Relocation agents are people who will be able to help you find the home that is right for you abroad, for instance in Spain.

The idea is not that are just trying to flog you a home, but that they offer help, advice and support you need going through what can be a daunting and potentially complicated process.

There is an important difference between an estate agent and a relocation agent. Whilst an estate agent is appointed by the vendor and works for them to sell the property in effect, a relocation agent rather works specifically for you, the person looking to buy property.

Therefore they should find you a selection of properties to look at, that meet your budget and also your location and other preferences. If you have watched property programs on TV where they get shown around a range of properties, then this shows one element of a relocation agent: identifying suitable properties for you. But the focus should not just be on sell, sell, sell, but rather being a support and advice network for you as well.

As with anything, some relocation agents will work harder on your behalf and offer more support for a longer period of time than others. For this reason it is really important, if you can, to get some recommendations through word of mouth. Failing that at least try to research the size of a company and how long it has been operating in the area. Also it is generally thought that specialists can be better than estate agents that offer this service.

It is worth saying that it is not essential to appoint a relocation agent: you don't have to have one when moving to Spain, but many people recommend it. It is important to only use the service of one relocation agent to ensure that the process is consistent: and of course also if one relocation agent realises that you are also using the services of another then they may not be too impressed and this could impair the quality of the service you receive.
