Spain and Utility Services

Whilst we grumble about them, the fact is that we probably have the most reliable and best utility services in Europe in the UK. The electricity and water rarely get turned off or run into problems. Whilst we might pay an arm and a leg for them, for most homes the service cannot be faulted.

However, when you move to Spain things can be quite different. Compared to England you will find in most areas that the electric and water are not what you would call reliable. Whilst this is just a fact of life for the Spanish and something that they are used to, if you come to Spain from abroad then it is fair to say that it can be something of a culture shock!

Also it varies from region to region, and in particularly dry regions it can be more of a problem than others. For instance if you are relocating to the south and particularly to the south east, then it has well known problems with water supply, and things may get worse in the future if the scientists fears of global warming come to fruition and result in Spain getting less water in rainfall than it currently does.

Whilst future technologies may make the creation of drinking water from seawater more financially viable, you should not consider this a certainty and therefore do some research into how reliable the electricity and water are where you are thinking of moving. The best way is simply to ask the locals or potential neighbours. If you like your creature comforts then you may be quite surprised by the answer you receive and it might even make you re-consider where you live!

If you are particularly reliant on services like the internet, and do a lot of work online or plan to work from home, then also make sure that you find out what the internet service is like. Again the speed and reliability can vary from place to place, and rather than rely on coverage maps by providers, the best way again is to ask the locals what the internet service is like, and ideally those as close as you can get (neighbours) as even within a relatively short distance the reliability can vary considerably.
