Tips on Living in Spain
It can be quite daunting to relocate to any country, and to really feel part of the culture you will need to know the language.
Therefore to make things easier it is highly recommended that you learn at least the basics before you relocate there. Many evening classes exist that teach Spanish, and if you have no money for that at all or the time and inclination then simply getting a CD that teaches you the basics can be a great help.
The language is not too difficult to learn, but many people get extremely daunted by the speed at which Spanish is spoken, it is one of the most quickly spoken languages in the world, and for that reason actually hearing what people are saying can be very hard at first. But don't be afraid to say 'mas despacio por favor' several times until you are hearing each individual word clearly!
You will also need to ensure that ig you have children then you consider their schooling before moving to Spain. In general education is to a good standard, and of course if you do have younger children then they will naturally become bilingual in education which is a fantastic thing to have and a big advantage over many.
Getting out and about and stuck into Spanish culture can make the transition easier, and don't be concerned if you see many cultural differences you were unaware of before moving, rather embrace them and go with the flow instead of either resenting them or being surprised, and you will settle in just fine. Take a positive attitude to the relocation and don't get too daunted by the move.
If you do not drive, then there is actually quite good public transport in many areas and particularly major towns and cities, and prices are quite reasonable. The pound has done badly against the Euro in recent years, but because most things in Spain were quite cheap compared to the UK even a couple of years ago, there is still a noticeable difference there and you should find the overall cost of living is less in Spain than in the UK.
