Key techniques to buying property overseas...

I think the key technique is actually to get the most out of other human's knowledge as you can.

And when buying overseas, this means talking to an expert in that particular market.

You can read all the magazines that you like and of course pick up useful tips from these and learn how the customs and legal process with regard to buying property works in each country, but nothing beats the human touch, and also to aid understanding talking to someone can work wonders at helping you understand and cement your knowledge of that system.

Therefore before going to even look at property in your chosen country I would suggest contacting an expert and having a chat about how the process works. There are companies that have experts available in the market in each country and often meetings can be arranged for free as long as you are doing so in good faith with a genuine interest rather than just picking their brains. This can be very valuable and of course you can then work with that provider if you are impressed with them to help you source the dream property for you and work through the process with you.

What other techniques to people use when buying property overseas to ensure that they give themselves the best chance of things going smoothly?

And what horror stories are there that people could learn from?

I have heard of people losing a lot of money in transactions that fall through because they don't follow due process but a lot of the costs that are incurred are non-refundable. Generally I think there isn't enough information out there that is easily accessible to the general public about buying overseas and so I was hoping to stimulate debate here... seems a bit quiet in these forums though!

I think that getting the most of other people is the best option. That way you can learn from other people's mistakes/experiences and take the best option. Reading magazines would help, but there is only so much they can tell you about purchasing property acroad.
